JT8Ds galore

I LOVE the new capabilities that Illustrator offers me over what I was doing in Paint Shop Pro. One of the components I was really looking forward to for the new 727-200 was the engines, and how much more accurately I would be able to depict the famous JT8D. Below is a sampling of the various engine options that I've developed for use with the profile, depending on livery and time period. Although I haven't yet done the JT8D-200 for the Super 27 option, I definitely have plans to create it. At the very least, it'd be great to do a TransMeridian 727-200 with the Super 27 conversion. Such a great little airline that faded away much too quickly.

  1. Good eye for the details, Andy. So often I see profile art that essentially takes a one-size fits all approach and doesn't reflect what I call "historical-technical accuracy".

Of course I'm personally opposed to husk kits myself- it was very rare even in the twilight days of passenger 727 ops by Delta and American to see a hushkitted 727 at DFW.

You'll love Illustrator, when I went from PSP 7.0 to Illustrator 10, it was like going from a Swiss Army knife to a having a whole garage of Craftsman tools.

  2. Thanks, JP! Yeah, I absolutely fell in love with Illustrator when I first started playing around with it last month. I couldn't believe the kinds of details I was able to add with it over PSP. But I'm curious how well I'll be able to pull off the colorization with Illustrator since the tools are so different.

  3. Experiment and you'll figure out what works best for you. I used to use both Photoshop and Illustrator for a given illustration but for the last few years now do the whole illustration inside of Illustrator. Which version of Illustrator are you using?

  4. I'm using CS4. And believe me, the experimenting has been taking place ever since I first started this profile! I'm glad it didn't take me too long to get the hang of the basic stuff, but like I said, I'm a bit anxious about the colorization...lol. Interesting you should mention using PS and Illustrator together. I was actually considering doing that since it seems like many of the top profile guys do that. But one of the reasons I switched to Illustrator was to take advantage of the ability to resize my work however I wanted without losing image quality. So I'll probably just try to do everything in Illustrator.
